September 29, 2009 - The three members of The Greencards, joined here by guitarist Jake Stargel, have just released their fourth album of acoustic folk music, Fascination. The group formed in the musical hotbed of Austin, Texas, and has since moved its home base to Nashville.
Coming together and bonding over their love of American music, two Australians — mandolin player Kym Warner and bassist Carol Young — and English fiddler Eamon McLoughlin specialize in jaunty instrumentals ("Prelude," "2 O'Clock in the Morning") and sweet vocal arrangements, featuring Young's soft alto. Stargel co-wrote the title track to Fascination, and has become the group's "resident American."
At the Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, Ky., the group makes its third appearance on Mountain Stage since 2005. To wrap up the set, Mountain Stage pianist Bob Thompson performs the classic American tune "Without a Song," a favorite of host Larry Groce.
