NPR's Tom Gjelten reports that the U.S. has landed 500 marines at an isolated desert airstrip southwest of Kandahar to establish a forward operating base for hunting Osama bin Laden and his fellow al Qaeda members. In the next 24 hours the number of Marines at the still secret base is expected to swell to around 1,000.
