Plastic Explosives a Challenge for Airline Screeners

This weekend's arrest of a man who boarded a commercial airliner with plastic explosives hidden in his sneakers highlights the difficulty of screening passengers for bomb-making materials. Officials have been aware of the threat since the mid-1990s, when Ramsi Youssef, organizer of the first bombing of the World Trade Center, carried a bomb-making kit onto a Japanese airliner.
