Former child star of "The Cosby Show" and "That's So Raven" actress and pop artist Raven Symone opens her music file and shares what music is playing in her ear (in addition to her own hits). Simone's top picks include everything from musician Karsh Kale, to lovebird artists Jay-Z and Beyonce and soul singer Meshell Ndegeocello

MICHEL MARTIN, host:

And while we're on a musical theme, we thought it would be a good time for one of our regular features we call In Your Ear. Today, Raven-Symone: the actress who began her career on the "The Cosby Show" at the age of three playing the role of Olivia. Later in the week we'll hear more about what's she's been up to and we'll talk about her life and her career and her latest accolades. But first, she tells us about some of the music that keeps her going when she's on set.

Ms. RAVEN-SYMONE (Actress): Recently, I was on a show called "That's So Raven" where I played this out-of-control psychic. But during that time on the show, I got to immerse myself in lots of different types of music because it takes a lot to be, you know, moving around that much on a show, so I had to calm myself down. And one my favorite artists and one of the first songs that always pops up on my Genius Bar playlist when I have my iPod is Karsh Kale, his album "Realize" and one of his songs is "Home."

(Soundbite of song "Home")

Mr. KARSH KALE (Musician): (Singing) This light of our open heart... one by one...

Ms. RAVEN-SYMONE: I love his music because it evokes so much emotion for me, the fast, the slow, the painful, the happy and he always helps me jumpstart my day with all of his amazing mixes.

(Soundbite of song, "Home")

Mr. KALE: (Singing) Come to me.

Ms. RAVEN-SYMONE: The next one that pops up is one of my favorite artists Meshell Ndegeocello. I have literally stalked her around the country...

(Soundbite of laughter)

Ms. RAVEN-SYMONE: ...going to her different concerts. Still haven't met her. Meshell, I want to meet you. But on her album "Comfort Woman," I will definitely choose "Andromeda & The Milky Way."

(Soundbite of song, "Andromeda & The Milky Way")

Ms. MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO (Musician): (Singing) Take me down to your river. I wanna get free with you. Take me down, take me down. I wanna get free. Take me down to your river.

Ms. RAVEN-SYMONE: I am a stargazer. I do believe in the astrology and things of that nature so every time that song comes on, I separate myself from this world and I go out there with her melodic and soulful sounds. She's an amazing performer and hopefully one day I can get to work with her.

(Soundbite of song, "Haters")

If I had to choose one song that's happening right now it would be Jay-Z's song "Haters" off of his new album "Blueprint 3" because he says: I stretch work, yoga. To me that is the sentence of the century.

(Soundbite of song, "Haters")

JAY-Z (Rapper): (Rapping) Poser, no sir. My hustle, so Russell. I stretch work, yoga. You know I got it down dog, Al Roker. I used to knock pounds off. It ain't nothing for me to knock nails off of these MC's praying for my downfall...

Ms. RAVEN-SYMONE: One of my favorite songs. And it really is. It's the one song that I get up and dance to all the time. Every single time it comes on. No matter if I'm not happy or happy is "Single Ladies" by Beyonce.

(Soundbite of song, "Single Ladies")

Ms. BEYONCE KNOWLES (Entertainer): (Singing) All the single ladies. All the single ladies. Now put your hands up. Up in the club, we just broke up. I'm doing my own little thing...

Ms. RAVEN-SYMONE: If you're happy and you - no, if you're happy, that's me. That's my version. I changed it Beyonce. Ha, ha.

(Soundbite of song, "Single Ladies")

Ms. KNOWLES: (Singing) If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it. If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it. Don't be mad once you see that he want it. 'Cause if you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it...

(Soundbite of laughter)

Ms. RAVEN-SYMONE: If you're happy then you shoulda put a ring on it. That is my song. Actually, every time I listen to that song, my mom and I went to this tennis - you don't want the story behind it. But my mom does the dance -priceless. When my mom does the dance, I can't even handle this right now.

(Soundbite of song, "Single Ladies")

Ms. KNOWLES: (Singing) If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it. Don't be mad once you see that he want it. If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it. Wo oh ooh oh oh.

MARTIN: That was actress, singer, producer Raven-Symone telling us about the music playing in her ear. Later in the week we'll hear her thoughts on winning The Black Girls Rock Young Gifted and Black Award and everything else she wants to talk about. We are actually featuring two of the artists she mentioned, Meshell Ndegeocello and Karsh Kale in the next couple of weeks. We're still working on Jay-Z and Beyonce.
