Originally from the Muscle Shoals region of Alabama, Jason Isbell came to prominence as guitarist and contributing songwriter for the popular Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers. Since going solo in 2007, Isbell has released two albums — the latest of which, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, was recorded at the legendary FAME studios in Muscle Shoals.

The group, including Isbell's childhood friend Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja (formerly of Son Volt) on keys, Chad Gamble on drums and Browan Lollar on slide guitar, plays its own brand of deep Southern soul that nods to, but doesn't strive to imitate, the signature sounds of its homeland.

This segment originally aired on October 19, 2009.
