Varian Fry

Scott Simon talks to Sheila Isenberg about her biography of Varian Fry, an American who defied both the U.S. Government and the Nazi-allied Vichy government of France by rescuing more than 1,000 people fleeing Hitler's forces. Fry has been called America's Schindler. (The book, A Hero of Our Own: The Story of Varian Fry is published by Random House.)
