Songwriter Jill Sobule released her latest album, The California Years, through an unconventional yet increasingly common business model: She set up a pay-what-you-like Web site so her fans could donate at various levels. She eventually raised more than $70,000, and even recorded vocals with one of her contributors. The album is a love song to her adopted home of California, and it features production work by Don Was and studio wizards Jim Keltner and Greg Leisz, among others.

In this, her fifth appearance on Mountain Stage, Sobule and the Mountain Stage band that she laughingly calls "mini-Pearl Jam," run through four cuts from The California Years. Harmonica player Pat Bergeson, who tours with Madeleine Peyroux, joins her in the opener, "Where Is Bobbie Gentry?"

This segment originally aired on October 21, 2009.
