Best known as a prominent player in Drive-By Truckers, Patterson Hood has reinvented himself as a solo singer-songwriter. Back in 2001, Drive-By Truckers released a critically acclaimed double-disc set, Southern Rock Opera, which would be followed by many more beloved albums. It was during this time that Hood compiled a number of tracks that didn't fit the Truckers' rough style.

Trudging through a difficult period in his life, Hood gathered these darker compositions into a set of acoustic demos that eventually formed the album Killers and Stars. Several years after the release of that disc, Hood has returned to writing solo. His new album is full of dark and creepily stirring guitars and compelling story-songs. Murdering Oscar (And Other Love Songs) is far more intimate than his previous works, and even finds Hood collaborating with his father, a fellow musician.
