NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports from Rome that the European public has been very critical of Israeli operations in the West Bank. Europeans have staged a series of pro-Palestinian demonstrations and some European officials have suggested imposing sanctions against Israel. The rhetoric and a wave of attacks on synagogues and Jewish cemeteries have prompted fears of rising anti-Semitism.
