October 26, 2009 - Though they perform under the pseudonyms Gala Bell, Kamer Maza and TORG, Music Go Music is actually composed of Meredith Metcalf, David Metcalf and Adam Siegel from the L.A. group Bodies of Water. That band is known for grand indie-pop in the tradition of Arcade Fire, but Music Go Music allows them to fully embrace their disco, electro and techno interests. Perhaps they should quit their day jobs, because Expressions is 45 minutes of freakishly contagious Euro-pop bliss.
"Light of Love" incorporates girl-group harmonies, airy synths and slow-then-fast pacing reminiscent of '70s rock radio. It's an earworm of a track worthy of ABBA, given its unabashed pop pretensions and simple, universal story line: Lonely, down-in-the-dumps girl meets dreamy boy, girl hems and haws but eventually falls under his spell, true love comes speeding around the corner and knocks her onto her derriere. Sure, the words — "I drifted along in the ocean of life / But then you pulled me, dear, from the waters of strife" — aren't going to inspire master's theses. But ABBA fetishists looking to branch out won't do a whole lot better.
