Bergen-Belsen

Weekend Edition Saturday presents a recording made on Apr. 20, 1945 of survivors of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp singing at a Shabbat service five days after the liberation of the camp. The recording was part of a radio dispatch filed by Patrick Gordon Walker of the BBC and transcribed in New York by Moe Asch of radio station WEVD. It was recently discovered by the Yiddish Radio Project's Henry Sapoznik at the Smithsonian Institution among a collection of short-wave radio transcriptions.
