Jerry O. Potter, author of The Sultana Tragedy tells Linda Wertheimer about the worst maritime disaster in U.S. history, the Apr. 27, 1865 explosion and sinking of the grossly overloaded steamboat Sultana in the Mississippi north of Memphis. The accident claimed the lives of nearly 1,300 Union soldiers who were being transported following their release from the Confederate prisons at Andersonville and Cahaba.
