Essay: Database Disparity

After hearing the horror story of a man who clashed with his state's Department of Motor Vehicles over the gender designation on his driver's license, Scott Simon wonders if the excuse — database intergration problems — is the bureaucrat's version of "my dog ate my homework." United Airlines and the INS also claim database disparity as the reason they sent documents to Sept. 11 hijackers six months after the terrorist attacks.
