Indian Trust Fund

NPR's Allison Aubrey reports on Joseph Kieffer, the court monitor appointed to track the Department of Interior's efforts to reform the Indian trust fund. Kieffer's reports criticizing reform progress have lead to contempt charges against Department Secretary Gale Norton and her assistant. In turn, the department has called for Kieffer's dismissal. Some Indian groups are calling attempts to fire Kieffer unfair, and critics say the fund needs a serious overhaul.
