The Emperor of Ocean Park

Yale law professor Stephen Carter turned the book world upside down when he was given a $4-million advance for two works of fiction. The first book, The Emperor of Ocean Park (Alfred A. Knopf; ISBN: 0375413634), a mystery story about an upper-middle class black family in Washington, D.C., has been greeted with a mixed response. Tom Vitale offers a profile of this first-time fiction writer.
