Fired U.S. Attorney Testifies on Death Penalty
One of the federal prosecutors whose firings caused controversy earlier this year testified about a death penalty case Wednesday on Capitol Hill.
Former U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton of Phoenix told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he had objected to the attorney general's insistence that he seek the death penalty in a murder case with only circumstantial evidence.
Sen. Russell Feingold said department rules set to take effect soon would forbid prosecutors to make public complaints about such disputes.
