Mom's Values Challenge Cambodian-American Teen

text sizeAAA
June 27, 2007

June is filled with high school graduation ceremonies, and Youth Radio's Chandra Touch, a graduating senior from Portland, Maine, and a first-generation American, will be the first person in her family to earn a high school degree.

Her Cambodian-born mother is distant toward her activities, including cheerleading, at high school. Her mom has never watched her cheer — she objects to the short skirt and wishes the daughter would spend more time with her.

As Chandra looks forward to the next chapter of her life, she realizes that her ambitions are foreign to her mom.
