The Brazilian guitarist, pianist, and composer studied piano and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Gismonti lived with Amazon Indians in Brazil's rainforest to learn their music. He combines both — and all of the other influences he has absorbed — in his own music. Michelle Mercer visited him at home in Rio de Janeiro.
