The Glaswegian rock band 1990s traffics in a sound straight out of New York City.
The Glaswegian rock band 1990s traffics in a sound straight out of New York City, with testosterone-fueled lyrics and the old-fashioned strut and swagger of classic rock 'n' roll. The group's irreverence recalls the posturing of countless handsome, hungry young men in their prime, as well as the measured cool of any number of trendy pop stars.
Formed by members of the defunct Yummy Fur — notable for also spawning Franz Ferdinand — the trio opts for fun shout-alongs and catchy guitar riffs over complicated production techniques. In the band's own words, 1990s plays music the way "a blonde gets out of a car."
In "Cult Status," tongue-in-cheek singer John McKeown proclaims, "My cult status keeps me alive" with all the preening attitude of Mick Jagger in his prime. Running less than three minutes, it's a high-spirited romp through the rock of yesteryear, with all the requisite boasting, a catchy chorus and a hilariously rude punchline.
