The First Marine Division band — which could be found at ceremonial events not long ago playing John Phillip Sousa — now finds itself in the Kuwaiti desert preparing for battle. In the Marines, everyone is trained for combat, and members of the band will handle heavy machine guns if and when the Iraq war begins. Their mission is to help protect headquarters from counter-attack. Some are a bit surprised by this change in assignment, but all say they will fulfill the mission. NPR's John Burnett reports from Kuwait.
