A Model Bridge That Is a Wonder to Behold

text sizeAAA
July 13, 2007

Remember the Erector Sets you played with as a kid? Retiree Frosty Wyrick took that pastime to a new level by building a scale model of the Mackinac Bridge which connects Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The model weighs more than a ton; it took longer to build than the real bridge.

Wyrick is taking the bridge to the Straits of Mackinac for a dual event: the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Mackinac Bridge (for 41 years, the largest suspension bridge in the world) and a convention of the AC Gilbert collectors group — the company that manufactured erector sets.

Amy Robinson reports from member station WCMU.
