text sizeAAA
November 2, 2009

Edward Cespedes-Rodriguez claimed he didn't see Kate Altermatt, who was dressed in an orange bunny suit for Easter. She was peddling a pedicab and the crash sent her flying. Cespedes-Rodriguez testified last week he was fumbling for his dropped cell phone at the time. But the court sides with the bunny. A local newspaper reports Cespedes-Rodriguez was convicted of hit and run.

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep.

A Mercedes driver in Portland, Oregon, admits he was distracted. He was looking for a dropped cell phone. Edward Cespedes-Rodriguez smashed into a bicycle taxi or pedicab. He says he never saw the crash that's why he kept driving. The pedicab rider disagreed. She confronted him in court. The motorist was convicted of hit-and-run driving, since the victim he supposedly never saw was wearing a six-foot-tall orange bunny suit for Easter.
