November 9, 2009

Thirty-five years ago, somebody stole a Volkswagen van in Spokane, Wash. It turned up last month in perfect condition in a shipping container bound for Germany. CNN says the car belongs to Allstate, which paid off the owner years ago and made a profit. The van was worth a few hundred dollars in 1974; it's worth $27,000 now.

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep.

At least the car thief took good care of the loot. Thirty-five years ago, somebody stole a Volkswagen van in Spokane, Washington. Last month, the van turned up in perfect condition in a shipping container bound for Germany.

CNN says the car belongs to Allstate, which paid off the owner years ago and made a profit. The van was worth only a few hundred dollars in 1974. As a classic car, it's worth $27,000 today.

It's MORNING EDITION.
