Zee Avi was born in Borneo and moved to Kuala Lumpur during her teenage years, when she began writing and singing her own material. She came into notoriety in a truly 21st-century manner: She began posting videos to YouTube after attending fashion school in London. Her "last" video, for a Christmas song, attracted the attention of Raconteurs drummer Patrick Keeler, who sent the video to some industry friends. Before long, Avi was on her way to Jack Johnson's Brushfire recording studio to record her self-titled debut album.
Joined here by Harris Pittman on bass and Gabe Palmer on drums, Avi puts a soft, gentle touch on songs from her debut recording — including a playful story-song about a heroin-addicted lover, "Poppy," which wasn't heard on the radio broadcast. She picks up the ukulele for the bouncy "Just You and Me" before performing the English/Malaya hybrid "Kantoi," which translates to "Busted."
