In December 2009, the American Smelting and Refining Company reached a settlement in one of the largest environmental bankruptcies in U.S. history. Part of the settlement requires Asarco to clean up its copper smelting plant in El Paso, Texas, which has roots in that area dating back to 1887. Throughout the last 123 years, the plant has consistently been accused of polluting and contaminating the air and soil in El Paso.
