Don DiLego launched his career as a member of the Boston band Standing on Earth, but after the band signed a major-label development deal in 1996, the group split and DiLego moved to New York City. Influenced by the reworked sounds of his earlier songs with Standing on Earth, he completed Ohio Fight Song in 1998, then signed a deal with Universal a year later.

After the release of The Lonestar Hitchhiker, DiLego decided to start his own record label, Velvet Elk Records, and create a remote recording studio in Pennsylvania. Influenced by his admiration for 1970s art, Photographs of 1971 is DiLego's third album, released last summer through Velvet Elk. Featuring compressed guitars and a flat drum sound, the disc recaptures the rhythm of '70s movies and photographs, as well as DiLego's own distinct take on alt-country.
