Letters: Ram's Head

An interview Tuesday about a dispute between a Florida high school and the automaker Chrysler spurred many listeners to write, and most took opposite sides. Some felt Chrysler was unfairly forcing the school to stop using it's ram's head logo, which is identical to the company's Dodge logo. But others took a different position. Melissa Block reads listeners' letters.

A few moments now for your letters, and yesterday's hot topic was the dispute between Florida's Lake Mary High School and the automaker Chrysler. The school's mascot is a ram and for years, it's used a ram's head logo identical to the one found on Dodge models. Chrysler threatened to sue; the school district decided not to fight; and now, Principal Michael Kotkin has to get rid off the logo.

Mr. MICHAEL KOTKIN (Principal, Lake Mary High School): It's going to be quite expensive, as you can imagine, because when you look at a gym floor - to replace a gym floor is going to be an easy $15,000.

BLOCK: Many of you felt Chrysler was being a bully. Richard Korb(ph) of Fullerton, California, writes: I cannot believe that Chrysler is making a high school spend thousands of dollars to remove their ram logo. All schools are feeling the pinch of the recession just as much, if not more, than the Chrysler Corporation. Korb continues, Chrysler is giving up on free advertising for a ton of bad PR.

But many more of you felt the school was in the wrong. Jessica Sharon(ph) of Park Ridge, New Jersey, says this: It may be tempting to take the side of the perceived David over that of the perceived Goliath but as a graphic designer, I can tell you that the theft of creative property is a real problem.

Sharon goes on, perhaps instead of passively encouraging the students to feel outraged that the school has finally got caught plagiarizing the Dodge logo, the school should be admitting its guilt and talking to the students about the ethics of respecting copyrights.
