This week there was devastation and loss as bridge collapse in Minneapolis; Congress acted on an ethics bill, tightening controls on lobbyists; Defense Secretary Robert Gates returned from a trip to the Middle East and Gulf States, openly discouraged about Sunni withdrawal from the government and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's inability to get his government's act together; One of the oddities of the week was the Russian announcement that it had planted its flag on the seabed six miles under the North Pole, and claimed all the oil and gas resources that might be found there.
