'Peace Jirga' in Afghanistan to Draw 700 Leaders

text sizeAAA
August 8, 2007

On Thursday, some 700 Afghan and Pakistani tribal elders and local leaders will gather for an unprecedented meeting to see if they can close an ever-widening gap over security, the Taliban, al-Qaida and even the long-disputed border between the two countries.

This "peace jirga" will be held in huge tents in Kabul and is expected to last four days. But even before the agenda is ironed out, critics complain that the jirga will do little good, as the decisions that are reached will not be binding.
