The Rock Bottom Remainders are best-selling authors by day and rock stars by night. Among the band's members are such literary lights as Stephen King, Amy Tan, Matt Groening, James McBride and Mitch Albom — not to mention Dave Barry, Scott Turow and Roy Blount Jr., who joined Melissa Block, host of NPR's All Things Considered, in the studio.

The band is currently in the middle of an East Coast tour raising money for Haitian relief and several charities. Their name refers to "remainder books," or unsold publishers' copies that are sold at discounted price. Despite all the tomfoolery, there's one professional musician in the bunch: Roger McGuinn. The former Byrds frontman is lending his talent on their brief tour. And how does the band of authors characterize their sound?

"Hard listening music," says Barry, laughing.
