World War I veteran John Shalla died on May 8. His ashes will be interred today at a ceremony with full military honors in Pittsville, Wis. Shalla was 106 years old and had attended Memorial Day ceremonies for 50 years. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that about 500 World War I vets are still alive.
