In addition to his duties as a performing member of the program's house band, jazz pianist Bob Thompson can sometimes be heard on Mountain Stage performing solo piano arrangements. His band, The Bob Thompson Unit, has just released another record of refined modern jazz: Smile. The group takes center stage on Mountain Stage in celebration of its latest release.

"Feel the Heat" was co-written by Thompson and bassist John Inghram, while "First Born" is a collaborative effort between Thompson and saxophonist Doug Payne. Joining them are guitarist Ryan Kennedy and drummer Tim Courts.

A staple of West Virginia's jazz scene for more than two decades, The Bob Thompson Unit still performs a weekly gig in Charleston and various venues throughout the state and the East Coast.
