RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

When an African tortoise named Lucy escaped a garden center in New Hampshire, the owners didn't expect she'd survive the winter. Four years later, Lucy is back. Her owners believe she made it through by digging a hole, which tortoises do to avoid harsh weather, though normally Lucy would be trying to beat the heat and drought of the Sahara Desert. So it's still a mystery how Lucy survived and thrived, returning 35 pounds heavier.
