When an African tortoise named Lucy escaped a garden center in New Hampshire, the owners didn't expect she'd survive the winter. Four years later, Lucy is back. Neighbors called last week to say they had spotted Lucy.

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

When an African tortoise named Lucy escaped a garden center in New Hampshire, the owners didn't expect she'd survive the winter. Four years later, Lucy is back. Her owners believe she made it through by digging a hole, which tortoises do to avoid harsh weather, though normally Lucy would be trying to beat the heat and drought of the Sahara Desert. So it's still a mystery how Lucy survived and thrived, returning 35 pounds heavier.

It's MORNING EDITION.
