Free Energy is one of Philadelphia's best rock 'n' roll bands. Formed in the fall of 2008, the band soon received help from LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, who guided the band's initial efforts and produced its debut album, Stuck on Nothing. Its songs buck the lo-fi trend in indie rock and hearken back to the stadium rock of old.

The band's sound is grounded in traditionalist rock — from Cheap Trick to Thin Lizzy — yet Free Energy's infectious swagger and upfront delivery make its sunny, guitar-driven anthems sound very much in the present. Singer Paul Spranger's raw vocals are a good fit for the band's cheery lyrical content, going especially well with a wailing electric guitar.
