RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

When Quinnipiac University in Connecticut tried to replace its women's volleyball team with a competitive cheerleading team, a federal judge pushed them way back. He said competitive cheerleading doesn't qualify as a real sport and he called the college's decision gender discrimination. Officials at the school say they'll make things right by adding a women's rugby team.

It's MORNING EDITION.
