Brandi Carlile first gained national renown after a memorable performance at the Sasquatch Music Festival, during which she caught the attention of Dave Matthews, among others. The native of Ravensdale, Wash., has gone on to release a string of well-received albums — and, of course, to land her songs ("The Story," et al) on an even longer string of TV shows. Carlile's new album, Give Up the Ghost, is full of raw, big-voiced emotion. Here, she performs live at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I.
