Woman Recalls Journalist's Help Leaving El Salvador
In the 1980s, Dale Maharidge was a young reporter for The Sacramento Bee covering the war in El Salvador. During his travels, he smuggled a Salvadorean family into the United States.
Lil Beatriz Calderon Huezo, a baby at the time, recently contacted Maharidge to hear his side of her family's immigration story. Maharidge, now a professor of journalism at Columbia University, and Huezo, who lives and works in Sacramento, Calif., talk with Madeleine Brand.
