Active Child: At Home In The 'Wilderness' In the "Wilderness" populated by the L.A. band Active Child, falsetto-driven lamentations meet an unsettled electronic landscape marked by synth washes and portentous clicks and whirs. The resulting concoction piles atmosphere atop atmosphere until it lands somewhere truly beautiful: one part ambient electronica, one part bedroom folk.

  • CD: Curtis Lane EP
  • Genre: Electronic Pop

In the "Wilderness" populated by the L.A. band Active Child, falsetto-driven lamentations meet an unsettled electronic landscape marked by synth washes and portentous clicks and whirs. The resulting concoction piles atmosphere atop atmosphere until it lands somewhere truly beautiful: one part ambient electronica, one part bedroom folk.

"It's so cold, but you know we belong there," Philadelphia Boys Choir alum Pat Grossi sings, summing up the conflicting moods in play here. For every element that makes "Wilderness" seem remote — the eschewing of organic instrumentation, the frequently inscrutable words — something strangely soothing makes the music endure. Active Child's debut EP, Curtis Lane, may be a digital-only sampler, but it finds a young singer and musician already living up to his own promise.
