Elvin Bishop has had the blues for more than 40 years. He recorded his first album, The Elvin Bishop Group, in 1969 and soon was playing with The Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East — a fitting pairing considering that Bishop is just as much about Southern rock as 12-bar blues progressions.
Since that time, he's played with all the modern blues masters, from B.B. King to John Lee Hooker, and recorded almost 20 albums. His latest, Red Dog Speaks, is named after his 1959 Gibson ES-345. Bishop recently stopped by the World Cafe studios to play that 1959 Gibson and discuss the particulars of his slide-playing style.
