French beaches along the English Channel were closed when a crocodile was spotted on the loose. The fugitive croc was quickly dubbed "Croc Monsieur" after France's famous grilled ham and cheese sandwich. In the end, it was just a piece of wood.

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

Even as Chicago was pulling alligators from its river this week, French beaches along the English Channel were closed when a crocodile was spotted. The fugitive croc, 12 feet long, was quickly dubbed Croc Monsieur after France's famous grilled ham and cheese sandwich. Ultimately, the French coast guard ascertained it was a case of crocodile tears, saying the supposed beast was actually a piece of floating wood.

It's MORNING EDITION.
