Army Chief of Staff
NPR's Tom Gjelten at the Pentagon tells Melissa Block about the nominee to be the next army chief of staff. In his effort to turn the Army into a more agile and more lethal force, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is expected to nominate a former commander of U.S. Special Operations. If confirmed, General Peter Jan Shoomaker would be brought out of retirement, an unusual if not unprecedented move. There is some resentment in the Army that Rumsfeld has not nominated an active duty general for the job, but apparently, he did offer it to a few others who turned it down.
