The communal apartment was a symbol of Communism's attempts to solve the Soviet housing crunch. In Moscow, many of these apartments have become upscale digs for Russia's new rich, their occupants resettled in private flats. But in St. Petersburg, a significant number people of is still forced to share baths and kitchens with neighbors, which creates tensions, and according to psychologists, even sometimes mental disorders.
