Philadelphia-based R&B duo Kindred the Family Soul performs music that includes poetic lyrics and soulful melodies, with jazz and Latin influences.

Made up of husband-and-wife team Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon, the duo sings about everything: love, life stresses, the challenges of parenthood and following one's dreams.

Graydon says she is glad to have "a platform to say certain things that are on our mind, to say the things we feel need to be changed — about the family about relationships about the world in general, especially when it has to do with African-American women and men and children

"But the theme overall is love," Dantzler adds. "Love is the message."

Kindred the Family Soul joins NPR's Tavis Smiley to talk about their music and their debut release, Surrender to Love.
