The Central Valley's premier supergroup, Admiral Radley, brings the band's hazy, dreamily rocking best to this late-summer show at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. Featuring songs from the group's debut album, I Heart California, Admiral Radley's set played out as a trip through the sun-bleached freeways and cigarette-studded beaches of the Golden State.

Flanked by screens capturing warped, overexposed projections, Aaron Espinoza (of Earlimart) and Jason Lytle (of Grandaddy) traded off vocals and jokes, countering audience requests for their old bands' songs with a casual "Never heard of it."

Set highlights include I Heart California's title track, the Star Trek ode "GNDN" and "Sunburn Kids," an anthem for the pale. Ariana Murray's delicate clockwork waltz "The Thread" provides touching sentimentality, as does "Everytime I'm With You," a song Lytle originally wrote with the late Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse for the Dark Night of the Soul project.

In an interview with the band, Lytle described the group as "a Dumpster that we've converted into a jacuzzi," floating in the ocean that other California-based pop acts have evoked.  But, then, Admiral Radley is California.
