Ali G's Hometown, Staines, Considers New Name

The town of Staines doesn't have the most laughable name in England — given other towns in the region, like Slack Bottom and Beggars Bush. Still, it has been the butt of jokes as the fictional hometown of "Ali G," a character played by the comedian who brought us "Borat." Now a Staines business leader proposes poshing up the name with the river that links it to London: "Staines-upon-Thames" — something another citizen of Staines calls  "pretentious nonsense."

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

The town of Staines doesn't have the most laughable name in England, given it's full of towns like Slack Bottom and Beggars Bush. Still, Staines has become the butt of jokes since becoming the fictional hometown of "Ali G," a character played by the comedian who brought us "Borat." Now a Staines business leader proposes poshing up the name with the river that links it to London: "Staines-upon-Thames," something another citizen of Staines callspretentious nonsense.
