LIANE HANSEN, host:

To take a cue from Dan Buettner, listening to music is a step toward happiness. And many songs have been written to try to make you happy.

(Soundbite of theme song, "Happy Days")

Unidentified Group: (Singing) These days are all, happy and free. Those Happy Days. These days are all, share them with me. Oh, baby...

HANSEN: Ah, yes. It's "Happy Days," unabashed nostalgia for the '50s, heard on television in the 1970s, a decade that also spawned "The Partridge Family's" iconic theme.

(Soundbite of theme song, "Come On Get Happy")

THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY (Singing Group): (Singing) Traveling along, there's a song that we're singing. Come on get happy.

HANSEN: Then there are the subtle songs, the ones that work their way into your happy place without explanation, without regard to lyrics or genre.

Earlier this month, the Fox show "Glee" featured a cast rendition of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." The Glee cover soared into the Billboard Top 10, and the video performance scored more than 3.5 million views on YouTube. You'll hear why.

(Soundbite of song, "Teenage Dream")

GLEE (Singing Group): (Singing) My heart stops when you look at me. Just one touch, now baby I believe this is real. So take a chance and dont ever look back. Dont ever look back.

HANSEN: On Twitter, we asked for your happy songs. Selections ranged from '80s cheese to soul classics. "The Safety Dance," by Men Without Hats does it for user SGSpires68.

(Soundbite of song, "Safety Dance")

MEN WITHOUT HATS (Singing Group): (Singing) Safety dance. Aye. Safe, safety dance.

(Soundbite of song "Sir Duke")

HANSEN: User Raz Algethi(ph) can count on Steve Wonder's "Sir Duke" to make her happy every time.

As for me, well, it's an oldie but a goodie. The Turtles, aka Flo and Eddie, singing "Happy Together."

(Soundbite of song, "Happy Together")

THE TURTLES (Singing Group): (Singing) So happy together. I can't see me loving nobody but you for all my life. When you're with me...

HANSEN: Okay, so what music makes you happy? Let us know on Twitter. We're @nprweekend.

THE TURTLES: (Singing) Me and you and you and me, no matter how they toss the dice, it has to be. The only one for me is you and you for me; so happy together.

HANSEN: This is NPR's WEEKEND EDITION.

THE TURTLES: (Singing) I can't see me loving nobody but you for all my life. When you're with me. So happy together. So happy together. How is the weather? So happy together. We're happy together. So happy together. Happy together. So happy together. So happy together.

HANSEN: All together now, Im Liane Hansen.

THE TURTLES: (Singing) Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba. So happy together. Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba. We're happy together. Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba. So happy together. Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba. So happy together. Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba.
