Poets and Patriotism

The Fourth of July has been a holiday of contradictions for many people. Some of black America's most noted poets have written sonnets and simple rhymes exploring their love and disenchantment with this "land of liberty." NPR's Tavis Smiley talks with University of Arkansas Professor Yemisi Jimoh about the patriotic poetry of Langston Hughes and Gwendolyn Brooks.
