In Durham, N.C., a small business is making a big name for itself. "Locopops" makes popsicles in unusual flavors like avocado, chili chocolate and mojito. They even have varieties of edible sticks for dogs.


Back now with DAY TO DAY and a tasty summer treat in Durham, North Carolina.

Durham is quite a ways away from Mexico, but residents there has been enjoying frozen fruity desserts based on a Mexican concoction known in Espanol as peletos(ph). In Durham they're called Locopops.

Unidentified Woman #1: What do you think, you like the chocolate brownies better? The avocado?

Unidentified Child #1: Yeah, avocado.

Unidentified Woman #1: I think it's just like combinations that you would never expect to find anywhere and then you taste them and you're like, oh my god, this is so good.

Unidentified Man #1: Locopops is the best way to finish your meal, get the kids ready for bed. I mean, you can't ask for anything better in a neighborhood.

(Soundbite of children)

Unidentified Child #2: I get a chocolate brownie.

Unidentified Man #1: I'm working on chocolate brownies.

Unidentified Woman #2: We love the chocolate flavors and we like the flavors with the herbs like the grapefruit basil, the ones with rosemary - chocolate rosemary.

Unidentified Woman #3: We always get two each.

Unidentified Woman #2: Blueberry buttermilk is another favorite.

Unidentified Woman #3: Blueberry buttermilk was excellent.

Unidentified Man #2: What was that we got - it was kind of a coffee one?

Unidentified Woman #2: Cardimon latte.

Unidentified Man #1: Cardimon latte.

Unidentified Man #3: They're crazy. It's the name loco. A small or a large? Small?

Unidentified Man #1: I like to tell a little bit of the story about how the woman who founded it went down to Mexico and studied with like the master of the popsicle making and combined all these interesting flavors.

Unidentified Woman #3: Chocolate chilis.

Unidentified Man #2: Chocolate chili. All right, here goes nothing. Hmm. You know, at first it kind of tastes like chocolate but it gives kind of a spicy - really spicy now.

Unidentified Woman #4: Oh, that's so weird. That's so not normal.

Unidentified Man #1: Is there any secret to eating these in the summertime?

Unidentified Woman #3: Got to lick them.

Unidentified Man #1: Yeah.

Unidentified Woman #3: And then just a little niblet.

Unidentified Man #1: Mm-hmm.

Unidentified Woman #3: I get two of them and then I eat one of them and then when I get done with the one, then I go back in for the second.

Unidentified Woman #4: I always only get one. Is that strange?

Unidentified Woman #3: I just moved Durham about two months ago and I'm even right now buying a house based on the fact that it's close to Locopops.

Unidentified Woman #4: This Locopop is like happiness on a stick. I mean because it's really what it is. It's just like a big fat smile on a stick.

Unidentified Man #3: It's all right. Take your time.
