Republican Fred Thompson finally makes it official.

He announced Wednesday night that he is running for president.

He made the announcement on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno while the other Republican candidates were at a debate in New Hampshire.

John Dickerson, chief political correspondent with the online magazine Slate, was in the audience to witness Thompson's announcement. He talks to Robert Smith.
