The Family that Marathons Together
MELISSA BLOCK, host:
The 12 siblings of the Irwin family in Ireland can step aside, they've been topped by the 13 siblings of the Weisse family, originally from Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Last week, we told you that the Weisse clan was going to try set a Guinness Book World Record for the most siblings to complete a marathon. And yesterday, they did it, all 13 of them, ages 33 to 54. They had to finish in under eight hours and two of them, Ben and Bernadette, needed just about every minute. They walked most of the race. Jogged a little bit. Today, Ben Weisse told us that during the marathon, he got a call on his cell phone. It was his brother, Nick, already at the finish line calling from his cell phone.
Mr. BEN WEISSE (Sibling): He called me and said, where are you? And how are you feeling?
(Soundbite of laughter)
Mr. WEISSE: I said, about mile 23. I said, oh, we're just three miles to go and we've got a little over an hour, so I think we're in very good shape and we're very confident. So, yeah, they were kind of biting their nails wondering where we were.
BLOCK: The last two Weisse siblings crossed the finish line of the Fox Cities marathon in Wisconsin at just under seven hours, 15 minutes.
